A Quarter Century of Milestones
1979 Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders funds hospice research project conducted by Visiting Homemaker and Health Services Inc.
1980 Hospice of Burlington County incorporates as a community based not-for-profit organization.
1981 Clark Dingman recruited as hospice's first Program Director.
1982 Hospice services initiated with a census of ten patients per day.
1983 Hospice leases space from Trinity Episcopal Church at Second St., Moorestown.
1984 Hospice expands to serve Mercer, Camden, and Gloucester Counties.
1985 First Tree of Life celebrated in Moorestown.
1986 Hospice of Burlington County changes its name to Samaritan Hospice. Friends of Hospice Auxiliary begins its work on Samaritan's behalf.
1987 Samaritan becomes first in New Jersey to provide hospice care in nursing homes.
1990 Samaritan celebrates Tenth Anniversary.
1991 Diane Allen (WCAU-TV) narrates an educational video about Samaritan.
1992 Samaritan teaches health professionals about its services for AIDS patients and caregivers.
1993 National Hospice Organization (NHO) awards Samaritan two President's Award of Excellence for its educational programs.
1994 Do not resuscitate requirement (DNR) is eliminated to increase access to care.
1995 Samaritan has cared for more than 10,000 patients and families in its first 15 years.
Samaritan's Option for Living as One (SOLO) program is created to provide care and support for patients who live alone.
1997 Rita Frey is appointed as Samaritan's new President/CEO.
1998 Administrative offices move to Marlton to accommodate growth.
Samaritan demonstrates highest standards of care by voluntarily undergoing accreditation by Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations (JCAHO)
1999 Center for Grief and Loss is created to offer professional bereavement services to the entire community.
Transitions is developed for people who are not ready for traditional hospice care.
2000 Samaritan celebrates 20th Anniversary with average daily census of 167.
2001 Mary Ann Boccolini is appointed as Samaritan's new President/CEO.
Samaritan's census regularly tops 200 patients each day.
Samaritan introduces first support group in nation for those grieving a loss to Alzheimer's Disease.
2002 Samaritan adopts contemporary new logo.
Institute for Education and Research is created to advance the understanding and practice of hospice, palliative care, and grief support.
2003 Daily census tops 250 patients per day. Volunteers donate 13,098 hours of service.
Institute for Education and Research hosts a two-day conference for more than 200 nurses.
New Complementary Therapy Program offers Massage Therapy and other comfort modalities.
2004 Patient census tops 300 for the first time.
Samaritan introduces End Stage Heart Failure/Cardiac Disease Hospice Program.
Construction begins on Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Center at Virtua Memorial Hospital.
2005 Samaritan proudly celebrates a quarter century of service to the community.
The Samaritan Inpatient Hospice Center opens in Mt. Holly, NJ.
